A Fun Way to "Explore the Classical World"

Knowledge Quest has recently published "A Child’s Geography: Exploring the Classical World" by Terri Johnson.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce your children to Ancient History!  Terri Johnson did a spectacular job writing a “living history” book that teaches children (and adults too) about the “Classical World” as you journey around the Mediterranean Sea.  The book is written much like a travel log, describing life and culture in various countries such as Greece, Macedonia, and Italy.  Not only does she describe how people used to live, she also relates it to how people live today.  The stories are so interesting and the descriptions so vivid that it makes you want to “travel the world!”

In addition to the narration questions at the end of each chapter, the author has also included several internet links (like this one) to videos that describe the topics being studied.  The included CD contains recipes from the Mediterranean countries, extra reading suggestions, timelines, travel log, and additional activities for each chapter.  There is even a prayer guide for each country!  I am thankful that the book is written with a biblical perspective as well!

My boys and I look forward to learning so much this year as we study “A Child’s Geography: Exploring the Classical World!”

Memory Verse #15

Wow!  I can NOT believe it is already AUGUST!  In light of school starting in just 3 short weeks, I thought this verse was appropriate.

"Discipline your son,
and he will give you peace;
he will bring delight to your soul."
Proverbs 29:17

According to the commentary in my Bible, the word DISCIPLINE means to train and to teach.  That is exactly what we're trying to accomplish as Ethan begins FIRST GRADE and Evan begins NINTH GRADE!  I'm praying this year that they "will grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man" just as Jesus did as a child.

Pinterest Projects

What a nice day we've had!  It felt like FALL...it was only in the low 80's with a nice breeze!

I don't know who dreamed of Pinterest, but he or she was a genius!  I have had so much fun searching for recipes, birthday party ideas, and homeschooling tips!

Here are a few of the projects we tried today!

First, we made these recycled crayons!  I've seen this on several blogs over the last year or so & have always wanted to try it.  Very simple! Of course Ethan wanted to make some that were the colors of the rainbow.  In order!

 Then we tried this Pinterest find...Lemon Bars...Weight Watcher style!  2 Ingredients:  1 box Angel Food Cake Mix & 1 can lemon pie filling.  (Did you realize they both are FAT FREE?)  OK, they are not supposed to rise so high but I read some of the details on the blog AFTER I mixed it with a hand mixer...says to just stir instead.  But they are ohhhh so tasty!

So those are our 2 Pinterest projects for today.  The boys had a little fun together, acting silly as always...
